Astronomy in the movies

Since 2008, Dr. Beatriz García and I, in collaboration with Silvina Pérez and Raúl Gabellone, have worked on an exhibition that reviews how astronomy has entered into movies from a wide variety of viewpoints: interplanetary travels, astronomical events, astronomers, observatories as movie locations, biographies, etc. A number of around 100 movies were considered, with clips from a few seconds to less than four minutes long.

The premier was aimed for 2009 as part of the International Year of Astronomy. However, due to the scarce time that research and teaching leave us to work on this project, together with our modest amateur knowledge on video managing and edition, it has been delayed till 2011. On October 2010 (incidentally, "the year we make contact"), a preliminary version was presented as a 20 minutes talk at The Seventh Conference on the Inspiration of Astronomical Phenomena (INSAP VII), Bath, United Kingdom.

Trailer presented at the INSAP VII Conference held in Bath, United Kingdom, from October 25th to 29th, 2010.
Length: 3 minutes 37 seconds.
Size: 44 MBy.
Format: wmv.

Here is the poster presented at the XVII Annual Assembly of the International Astronomical Union held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August 2009, where we gave a brief summary of all the material included in the exhibition.
